The Mag 3 (Potter, Pooher & Erica) finally made the long ardous trip to Ballinger Canyon after many years of discussion. Eduardo was to join us since he has been hyping this place for months but the long haul from Dodger stadium SX and Tule fog was too much for him. There is no easy way to get to Ballinger (3 hours) and you can easily miss the road in once you get ther as there are no signs indicating where to turn. Once we arrived we were treated to a mini Hungry Valley complete with pit racers and wandering ATVer's, not a good start to a late start (11:00 am).
The riding area is small and the perimeter is fenced to keep people honest. The area has about 35 miles of single track, the rest being fireroads or ATV trails. There are some advanced trails that run along the many razors on the perimeter that will get you to pay attention especially when it drops 500 to 1000 feet on each side of the trail. We also found a cool trail, Mud Canyon that drops from the top down into a box canyon for about 3 miles from the top.
A return trip is probably not in the cards unless it was part of some other trip or in the advent of snow or rain which might the area more desirable to ride. This place is not the best kept secret we were hoping for but instead should be considered best kept clear.
