Ballinger Canyon

The Mag 3 (Potter, Pooher & Erica) finally made the long ardous trip to Ballinger Canyon after many years of discussion. Eduardo was to join us since he has been hyping this place for months but the long haul from Dodger stadium SX and Tule fog was too much for him. There is no easy way to get to Ballinger (3 hours) and you can easily miss the road in once you get ther as there are no signs indicating where to turn. Once we arrived we were treated to a mini Hungry Valley complete with pit racers and wandering ATVer's, not a good start to a late start (11:00 am).

The riding area is small and the perimeter is fenced to keep people honest. The area has about 35 miles of single track, the rest being fireroads or ATV trails. There are some advanced trails that run along the many razors on the perimeter that will get you to pay attention especially when it drops 500 to 1000 feet on each side of the trail. We also found a cool trail, Mud Canyon that drops from the top down into a box canyon for about 3 miles from the top.

A return trip is probably not in the cards unless it was part of some other trip or in the advent of snow or rain which might the area more desirable to ride. This place is not the best kept secret we were hoping for but instead should be considered best kept clear.

Old Chaney Ranch Ride Report

Twas a MAGnificent day at another "once in a lifetime" opportunity that only arises a few times a year. This time Dano hooked it up with an invite-only invitation to ride the latest and greatest private track in SoCal "Old Chaney Ranch". The ride day was limited to 100 people, however, no need for limits as there were only around 30-40 people. We all know Moto-ers typically rest longer than they ride, combine that with the track being incredibly long and you have what seems like a private track to yourself all day (unless your name is Jason Ingersoll, Mike Colvin, or Eric Wolfe, then you race each other until you are satisfied with the amount of dirt in your stache).

Like I said, the track is really long but in a good way. I was running about a 3:40-3:50 lap, but I'm a slow guy. The first 3/4 lap is pretty high speed with lots of fun yet safe table tops and plenty of elevation change. The last 1/4 lap has a few strange jumps that are super low speed launchers that shoot you straight up (reminds me of the 3 jumps along the parking lot at Doc Huss' track except shorter and steeper). The track held up well and never got too dusty or dry thanks to a few ranch-hands on the track with hoses ALL DAY.

I think it's safe to say we have the "in" now. Ed (the owner) is planning on doing a couple of these type of rides per month. The $40 fee is sorta steep and the drive is extra far but if it's definitely worth it to go once a month (the dude rolls around the pits in his Ranger with a pot of hot coffee for anyone who so desires!). He also has a pretty awesome campground setup with a full on bathroom with showers and whatnot. He mentioned that the day before the rides they do skeet shooting over his man-made fishing pond. I didn't ask, but nearly everyone there (including us) enjoyed a post ride brew so I assume the sauce is legal.

Here is some helmet cam, I slowed the video down so you could see the track clearly....not.

Logan rode his "bike" straight over to this MTB, and no kidding, tried to get on it. He's convinced he's ready. We're just glad he seems to be headed in the right direction.

Prose by Pooher

A message to me from el presidente, comandant, fuhrer ... hey pooher

Dan:
Right now the colon really calls the shots for Logan and he is okay with that, life is easy as there is always someone there to clean up after the colon. At some point he will realize that he has to control the colon for social conformity, and this is when trouble with colon first starts. The colon will start to voice it's displeasure by blurting out loud and smelly remarks. As kids we embrace this rebellion and use it to impress our friends, but really the colon is plotting for the day when he will again call the shots. As we age the colon slowly starts to become more flatulent and obnoxious, friends are no longer impressed, our kids go running away in terror from the sudden and foul outbursts. Later in life the colon turns irritable, reasserting it's control to the point were new underwear is required more frequently and depends are in the future. Some colons revolt so violently that surgery is required to remove them before they kill we are left holding the bag.

Hopefully Logan has a kind colon who will let him call the shots.
